Want Money for Art?

April 17, 2011

Hey if you’re an artist in Western Massachussetts you should probably come out and check out Valley F.E.A.S.T.   I’ve done a lot of ranting on this or that website about why it’s great that artists can get funding without a grant cycle, or how people who are putting up the money for art can actually have a direct say in what gets produced.   But if I can get real, for a second here (anyone…anyone looking for real talk here it comes):

F.E.A.S.T. is just a great time.  Really.  Good times.  Art + Food + Revelry + Live Music + Poetry (I’m partial to the poetry, myself)

So just in case you were curious and you wanted more info, I’m going to link bomb you on this one:

First off, BIG ups to Katherin Romansky and Now For Art  http://nowforart.blogspot.com/

And for our performers:

we have the heavy thump-funk of the macrotones: http://www.myspace.com/themacrotones

the vocal angst rock of The Crazy Exes from Hell:  http://thecrazyexesfromhell.bandcamp.com/

the poetry of Jon Sands http://www.jonsands.com/

and the mysterious Hip Hop stylings of Chantz

Stay tuned for more updates at valleyfeast.wordpress.com

and YOU STILL HAVE UNTIL THE 21st to submit a proposal

…and while I’m on the topic of deadlines, you can check out zombie submission guidelines here:

https://kevindevaney.wordpress.com/2011/03/20/zombie-attack-reloaded-call-for-submissions/

(the deadline is May 15th!)

and soon, I’ll be laying out the groundwork for POETRY CLASSES in the valley this summer.  That’s right, you can learn how to write poems from this guy!  Trust me, I got a degree.  That is to say, I would love to relate to you all the things I’ve learned about poems from Thomas Lux, Marie Howe, Jefferey McDaniel, Victoria Redel, and many other wonderful faculty at Sarah Lawrence College.    more updates to come

for now I’m off to the Poetry Festival at Sarah Lawrence to see some good friends read some awesome poems, but before I go, a quick and dirty shout out to the poetry brothel http://www.thepoetrybrothel.com/ for blowing my mind last night, got to hang out with these New School cats more often, for sure.

Alright, that should be enough links to keep you busy for a while, no?

EVERYTHING EVER CANCELED

April 13, 2011

Hey all.  I’m sad to report that both my reading for Thursday and Friday have been canceled.  Sad, I know, but there will be more coming up.

On the upside it means that I’ll be able to run around with Sarah Lawrence’s Disc Nuts tomorrow night in their game against SUNY Purchase, and I’ll be able to spend a bunch of time listening to awesome poetry at the Sarah Lawrence Poetry Festival!  (wow, this is a huge school spirit post!)  If you want to join in on the poetry festival fun (it’s totally FREE!)  check this shit out:  http://www.slc.edu/news-events/events/poetry-festival/Schedule.html

Also, I’ve been hustling hard trying to build an Art Bar.  But what I really need is to build a website.  Damn my lack of free time and web-building talent!  Anybody know anybody that could help me out?

Recap of Friday:
What a great night! Thanks to everyone who was involved! Poets, Projector Operators, Surprise Lighting Technicians, Artists of all stripes, everyone who came out to support, and everyone who came out to drink! I think I owe a lot of people some Tequila, but maybe I’ll make up for it next time Jasper throws a shindig.

I’ll be doing a few readings this upcoming week, one on Thursday, and one on Friday, so much craziness.  I’m on the home stretch with all my Graduate School stuff, getting ready to head out in to the real world.  If I hadn’t collected $150 in parking tickets in two days I probably wouldn’t be so excited to leave New York.  No offense to all the wonderful people who I’ve met in my time at Sarah Lawrence, but I’m going somewhere where people don’t hate everything all the time, cough on you, and charge you over $1000/month in rent.

I’m setting my sails for the Happy Valley, the glorious return to Paradise City, to attempt to teach poetry and who knows what else.  I know this, I hope to receive lots of submissions to Zombie Attack: Reloaded, (https://kevindevaney.wordpress.com/2011/03/20/zombie-attack-reloaded-call-for-submissions/) so that I can spend my week of family vacation reading about zombies on the beach while sipping on beer that I didn’t pay for.  Heaven.

Also, for those of you who were not at the reading last night, or who just want to see it again, here is the amazing video that Heather Strycharz composed to accompany the poem Cicadas: http://vimeo.com/22109251

or you can see more of her work at http://www.heatherstrycharz.com

I’m out to enjoy some of this lovely weather, probably toss a frisbee, love my love, etc.

ps. I ate an eggplant yesterday that was bigger than my head.  Thanks to http://whatthefuckshouldimakefordinner.com/
